SUBJECT DESCRIPTION

These subject gives students an opportunity to learn the entire research process including: formulating research questions; sampling; measurement; research design; data analysis; and, writing the research proposal.  It also addresses the major theoretical and philosophical underpinnings of research including: the idea of validity in research; reliability of measures; and ethics in conducting the research.

SUBJECT OBJECTIVES

The key objective of the research project is to expose students to the process which uses knowledge and skills to identify, define and analyse problems related to a specific area of research.

In this subject, an attempt will be made to:

  • Increase students’ understanding of the research process.
  • Develop awareness of the appropriate resources for research.
  • Increase students’ understanding of the practicalities, ethics and legalities involved in conducting research.
  • Give students the opportunity to develop a workable research proposal and respond to constructive criticism.

SUBJECT LEARNING OUTCOMES (SLOs)

Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to:

  • SLO 1: Gain an in-depth understanding of the research process
  • SLO 2: Use a range of both quantitative and qualitative research tools and techniques
  • SLO 3: Develop research questions and relate these to the broader research process in formulating a research proposal

Upon completion of the programme, students will be able to:

  • PLO 2: Apply relevant tools and techniques to interpret data and undertake analysis
