Hispanic Heritage Project
For my hispanic heritage project I chose to write about super model Christy
Turlington because I have seen her in many ads and commercials and was
familiar with her. Also, I wanted to write a report on a person that not many
people my age know about. This person stood out to me from all other hispanic
figures because not only is she my mothers favorite model butI was familiar with
her , but had no clue that she was hispanic so I wanted to learn more about her
backround as well as inform others about her.
Christy Nicole Turlington was born on January 2, 1969 in Walnut Creek,
Califonia she was the middle of three daughters born to Dwain Turlington, a pilot
for Pan American world Airways and flight attendant from El Salvador ; Maria
Elizabeth. Christy was discovered while riding horses by a photographer named
Dennie Cody from Florida, where her father was working as a training captain for
Pan Am. She soon began modeling after school during summers until she
graduated from high school. After graduation, she moved to New York City to
model full-time. Turlington achieved many accomplishments in the modeling
industry including several multi-million dollar contracts with companies like
Maybelline, Chanel and Calvin Klein.
Christy is also known as one of the most successful supermodels, but she has
rejected the 'supermodel' label. She is widely respected in the fashion
industry as one of the friendliest and most professional models in the
business. Also in 1993, her face was used on 120 mannequins created by
designer Ralph Rucci for the Costume Institute at the, causing her to be
called the 'Face of the 20th Century. In the 2000s, she has become a partner
to a skincare line and two active women's clothing lines produced by Puma.
Turlington is also an anti-smoking activist and an ambassador for CARE
which is a relief agency that brings health-care practitioners together to find
