Hitch
Interpersonal communication is defined as the sending and receiving of information
between two or more people (Sole, 2011). An important function of communication was
exercised throughout this movie in the forms of personal relationships developed by each
character. This function of communication is interactional. Through this interaction, different
social needs are met within the movie as the four main characters strive for both friendships and
intimate relationships.
Throughout the movie, Hitch, there were several instances of miscommunication on
account of characters withholding information from one another. My favorite instance of this
occurrence involved account executive, Albert Brenniman, and millionaire superstar supermodel,
Allegra Cole, become romantically involved after Brenniman is coached by New York's ever
popular date doctor, Alex Hitchens on how to make his feelings known to the girl of his dreams.
Hitch's only goal through his job is to help men who are unsure of themselves realize that even
they have what it takes to successfully express their feelings to a woman while allowing her to
do the same in return. His true goals and intentions were revealed when he is approached by the
egotistical, Vance Munson, who thinks that Hitch's profession enabled him to provide men with
ways to trick women into bed. Hitch refused to work with Vance because he was a slimy man
who only wanted one thing from women, and this was not at all what Hitch's job was about.
Vance thought he could get his way, by threatening Hitch and forcing him to work with him.
Little did Vance know, Hitch was stronger than he was, and told him not to mess with him! With
the audience being able to conclude the actual true intentions of Hitch from this scene, it opened
up the doorway for an understanding of the true intentions and goings-on behind Allegra and
Albert's relationship.
Hitch begins seeing, gossip journalist, Sara Melas. After Vance Munson reels her best
friend, Casey Sedgewick, into a one-night stand, Casey cries on Sara's shoulder telling her that
when Vance got up to leave, he mentioned the "date doctor". On a mission to expose the date
doctor, Sara tracks down Vance and threatens to air his dirty laundry in the her magazine if he
doesn't give up the date doctor's name. Vance gives her his card and says that is all that he
knows. She then gets her co-worker, Geoff, to pose as a potential client for the date doctor while
she stands afar and takes pictures. Now, presuming that Hitch's job detailed of helping men
score women into bed because of Casey's situation with Vance, she becomes enraged and
decides to get back at Hitch by writing an article for the paper that she worked for exposing him
as the infamous date doctor and naming Albert as a client who took part in his services as a fluke
to get close to Allegra. Upon reading this article in the paper, Allegra is so disgusted by both
Albert and Hitch's actions that she immediately breaks things off with Albert. It is made known
her true feelings for Albert as she sat through a board meeting in his absence glaring at his empty
chair with a disheartened look upon her face. Albert, on the other hand, is feeling just as bad as
he shows up at Hitch's apartment with a box of donuts saying that he is trying to eat until his
