Holden has a different view of money than most people. In chapters fifteen through seventeen he shows his thoughts about money in a weird way. The last sentence of chapter fifteen is "it always ends up making you blue as heal." This is referring to money. He is basically saying that having too much money makes you sad and depressed. Most people's goals in life are to have as much money as possible. Holden really doesn't like to lose things. There are a couple of objects he has that he has had for a long time. For example, the baseball mitt, and the red hat even though he just got it, it seems that he really cares for it. This shows that he cares about his belongings including money. He never really talked about his money, but in these chapters he brought it up a couple times. He met these nuns that had what looked like cheap suitcases and told them they needed to buy expensive ones because he can't stand inexpensive suitcases. Also, he talks about his dad being a wealthy corporation lawyer. You can tell from what he does that he likes to spend money, and doesn't care about not having much of it. In my opinion I think is the wrong way to go about. You should take care of your money and be thrifty.
"It always ends up making you blue as hell." (Page 113) Holden says this quote. He is talking about money in this situation saying that having a lot of it could make you depressed. His reasoning behind this could be because if you have too much money you don't have anything to work for which then makes you sit home all day and do nothing. I happen to agree with this quote. Having too much money doesn't necessarily buy happiness. You don't have anything to work for, and you have no desire for anything. I don't think this means you should go out and spend it at the same rate Holden does. I think you should be frugal.
In chapter fifteen Holden comes across two nuns and Holden helped them out with their suitcases. "They were these very inexpensive looking suitcases- the ones that aren't genuine leather or anything. It isn't important, I know, but I hate when somebody has cheap suitcases." (Page 108) This shows that Holden loves spending his money on not really useful things. A part in the book that contradicts that is when he puts his money in the locker and says "I should've taken my money with me. I hope it doesn't get stolen." This contradicts him spending his money because most people that spend their money wouldn't care that much about losing money. This shows that Holden's view on money is different then most people.
Holden thinks that money makes you sad, and creates a social barrier between people. This means that rich people only talk to rich people and the poor people only talk to poor people. It seems that Holden wants to be more of an adult rather then a kid by the way he
