Leonardo Da Vinci Was a man of many talents. Although he is known for his ability as an artist, he is also an inventor and scientist as well. He was the son of a 25 year old notary (book establisher), Ser Piero, and a peasant girl named Caterina. Da Vinci was born on April 15 1452 in Vinci Italy. His father took custody of him right after he was born. His mother moved to a completely different town and remarried someone else. Eventually between his mother and father he ended up with 17 half brothers and sisters.
Since his father was a notary Leonardo had access to scholarly books. At the age 15, his father apprenticed him to the renowned workshop of Andrea Del Verrochio in Florence; there he seeped his way into his fancy for artwork. Thus began a new journey for him into renaissance art.
One of Da Vince's first and most famous artworks was the "Last Supper" He finished this artwork in 1498. This particular piece he resembles the most important event on the Christian doctrine of salvation, the institution of Eucharist. This painting has been copied for centuries to be monumental in many places around the world; such as churches for worship, museums, and homes. If you have ever seen this beautiful piece you will notice the details and the people around Jesus and Jesus himself in the middle of the table. Also you will notice that you can tell it is from the renaissance period because of the gloominess of the colors and fine detail.
His next artwork was one that was not so famous but yet very interesting because it is showing archangel watching over the Virgin Mary. The name of this artwork is called "The Annunciation". It is said the Da Vinci copied the wings of the angel from an actual bird in flight. Yet the Background of the piece shows to be of a Harbor in Rome.
The last artwork I will talk about is the most famous by far. People of today's generation still know about it and tell about it. This is the piece called "Mona Lisa". This painting is very special to the world, so special that they store it in a bullet proof box in the museum Louvre. Leonardo was so found of the piece that he carried it everywhere with him until once sold the French King Francois. But this painting has always had people pondering on the same question, who is the person portrayed in this painting? Is it a man or a woman? Hints the eyebrows not drawn on the face.
Let's not forget his many attempts for new inventions. As we have learned in class Gutenberg was the man who invented the printing press, but Leonardo was the man who later on (half a century later) made the machine much easier for people to use, he made it possible for only one man to operate it instead of several.
Another one of his many machines was the Rotating Bridge, designed to connect an island stronghold with the mainland, this bridge could be swung across a stream or moat and back again by means of windlasses.
