Suzanne Collins says that the inspiration to write The Hunger Games came from channel surfing on television. On one channel, she observed people competing on a reality show and on another she saw an actual war coverage. She said "I was tired, and the lines began to blur in this very unsettling way." That's the moment when Katniss's story came to her. The whole games are shown in front of the cameras while the events are televised all over the country of Panem. I have chosen to speak about the reality televison because I watch some reality show and also because The Hunger Games is a televised battle until only one person is left.
To begin, the main dissimilar between reality television and The Hunger Games is the way people are chosen to participate. In reality, people are volonnteer to participate in a reality show. Indeed, they decide of their will to pass an audition. The casting directors often look for many different types of people. By choosing a diverse demographic of cast members, it appeals to a wide demographic of viewers, so the show makes more money, because there are more viewers. Also, by having different kind of people, it makes entertaining television, because people don't have the same point of view, so they fight more easily. On the other hand, the Hungame Games tributes are forced to parcitipate in the games. Also, there is no selection, people are choosing unwillingly during the annual Reaping ceremonies: it's all about the chance.
Another dissimilar between reality show and The Hunger Games is the type of reality show. In the real life, there are plenty of differents kind of reality TV show: Documentary-style (The Simple Life, Miami Ink), Competition/game shows (Dancing with the star, American Idol , Self-improvement/makeover (The Biggest Loser), Renovation (Pimp my Ride), Hidden cameras (Punk'd).
