"Hunters in the Snow"
In the exposition of this short story the audience's focus is brought onto the character of Tub. Tub is an overweight man, who lies to his friends about his obesity to refrain from being made fun of. Tub in the start is seen to be the outcast of the group of three friends, which are Tub, Frank, and Kenny. Kenny is the prime suspect of making fun of Tub and in the middle of the short story Tub winds up shooting him. Though Tub might seem as the character to feel sympathy for, one might say Frank is the one to sympathize with. Frank is stuck in the middle between Kenny and Tub, and makes the transition from Kenny in the exposition to Tub by the resolution. Frank also made fun of Tub, not knowing it affected him, but once he heard of the depression it brought Tub he stopped and felt bad for him. Frank is a fluid character who the audience sees progress throughout the novel. Especially in the affair Frank is having with the fifteen year old babysitter, because in this the reader realizes not to judge a person by their looks or the appearance, just as Frank did in the beginning with Tub. Frank came to the realization that Tub was a true friend and Kenny was just a selfish person, in which the reader sees when he blurts out Frank's secret. Therefore, as a reader the sympathy should go with Frank since not only does he have to decide between two friends, he also has to deal with this affair which can affect his family, especially his children's lives as mention in the short story.
