Hype Taking Control of Our Minds

In the essay, “Hype” by Kale Lasn, the author discusses the terrible effect that advertising cause on modern man.

Advertisement has been spreading everywhere and damaging out minds. Commercials are taking over our thoughts in a very large amount. We haven’t realized all nonsense that commercials because they have taken control so fast of our social life. Ads are no longer just placed where they usually used to be. Nowadays they are in buses, subways, cars, billboards, buildings’ walls, TV and even in newspapers. There are inside and outside the buses. As we can remember there weren’t commercials in newspapers, they used to give people just important information without interrupt people with any unnecessarily information like ads. Right now it’s time that there is no space to skip or hide from them. In corporate American view, free space may and have to be filled with some advertising massage.

Too much of anything could become harmful. Corporations and business marketing don’t think about people’s rights for privacy and silent moments. They don’t want people have these important and good things at all. They are adding ads everywhere where possible to add them.

I can accept a few ads and commercials those show me brand new product or services, but when it’s everywhere you turn, it’s a problem. For example, when I am in a bus and are exhausted going from school to home I want to relax my mind by thinking about something nice and calm or even my life. There are a lot of ads inside around the bus. So I try to think things that I want to think but I couldn’t concentrate on them. My eyes always get caught by ads those showing me new car that just came out. After that I just think about it, I have to collect money to buy this car. Furthermore, when my friends and I go out we see ads all over us. There are billboards with ads on the walls of almost every building and store, they are everywhere where we turn our eyes. We want to discuss with each other about our life changings and about some nice events those happened recently with us. Instead of it, we talk about new products which we saw on commercial. We also talk about things that we have to buy to become famous and popular like those people on commercials. We want to look like them. They influent in our mind their style of cloth, we think that we need to but jacket like gut on commercial wear. Many people are buying and wearing these stuff and we want to be like everybody else. Commercials and ads are manipulates us.

In addition, ads on TV teach kids bad behavior, drinking alcohol and smoke cigarettes. Kids see on commercials nice and strong man or women with bottle of alcohol or pack of cigarettes. After that they want to start to do these things. These commercials convince them to do so. Kids don’t know that they won’t become looks like these people from commercials after they start smoke and drink. Commercials don’t tell it to them. They just make people to but things and consume it with no thinking what could happen later with you and your body.
