I have had many jobs in my time; however the worst working experience I've ever had was my first job as counter staff at Robin's Donuts. My specific job duties varied from taking coffee orders, making coffee, making sandwiches to cleaning tables and counters, washing the floors and bathrooms, serving the customers. There were three main reasons why I disliked this job so much. Firstly, I was on my feet for my entire 8 hour shift. Sitting down was only allowed during break time which was only 30 minutes; by the time I would make it home, I was physically exhausted. I had no energy to hang out with my friends or go anywhere; all I wanted was to be off of my feet. Secondly, the second hand smoke was unbearable, by the time I got home all I could smell and taste was smoke. As an employee and a non-smoker, I could not complain about it and had no choice but to deal with it. Customers would come in and sit for hours smoking one cigarette after another and drinking one cup of coffee after another. Even on my break, I had to put up with co-workers smoking in the break room. It seemed as though I was the only non-smoking employee. Lastly, having multiple coffee orders and having to remember who wanted cream and sugar or just sugar or just milk got a little confusing at times. The orders did not stop at coffee; we had a deli where I would make sandwiches and soup, and I even had to perfect the cappuccino machine which was not easy let me tell you! For example, I had a huge line of customers waiting to order and this one particular customer decided to order a cappuccino. Well I had not familiarized myself with the machine at this point, and had to go find someone to help me. I followed the exact directions and still made a mess of things along with a long line of angry customers waiting to be served. This being my first job ever at the age of 17, I quickly realized that working in the food industry, serving others was definitely not for me. I quickly moved on to working retail in a shoe store. Serving shoes was much easier than serving coffee. Being into shoes and fashion, I feel I was able to relate with the customers much more, and we all know that there is no smoking in a retail store!
