The Impact of Technology
Technology is increasing in quality and quantity all over the world. It makes tasks simple and easy for people to use. In the current generation, technology is rapidly spreading to people of all ages. Adults, teens, and even children have embedded themselves in this technology so much that over the years, it has greatly impacted on the way humans think. The definition of technology is the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes. Basically, it means that people use ideas to create a piece of technology that makes tasks or actions easier to accomplish. In other words, technology is created to make things easier because humans are becoming lazier. Physically, humans are becoming lazier but also mentally. Technology has made it so that people do not have to use the human mind as much anymore. Currently, the largest piece of technology that has impacted on the masses is the Internet. The Internet seems infinite with information, entertainment, and business. People are attracted to the Internet because it makes life easier. Studying a subject can be done in a half hour. Commuting to work is no longer a problem with the Internet. This piece of technology is very appealing to many. So, because a large number of people use the Internet, the effect it has made is much easier to see. Now, there are differences of opinion regarding the impact of technology. For example, some may think that the impact technology has (been) making is benefitting the world while on the other hand, some think that technology has greater disadvantages on the way the human mind is thinking. Technology has made an impact on humans whether people think the impact is acceptable or not.
Education is definitely a great place to begin to view the effects of technology. Schools used to be (consist of) a man or a woman in front of a class of about twenty to thirty students teaching them a subject. In the present, this is not the case anymore. Technology is being integrated into education systems and curriculums so much so that many schools are now dependent upon technology. Pieces of technology such as laptops, iPads, and smart boards are now being used to educate. These methods of teaching are favorable because it is different (more advanced) and to some students it is fun and exciting compared to the old fashioned methods. According to Marcia Clemmitt's article, "Digital Education", she states that technology will save money and transform schools into more effective institutions. In the example of digital education, students are being taught in ways that they can easily connect with through technology. Through the process of education through digital media, Clemmitt claims that, "schools must prepare young people not only to use digital technology but also to understand how to program it, how it shapes culture and behavior and how it can be harnessed to perform tasks once considered the sole realm of humans." If this is what digital education is achieving, then the impact technology has made here is rewiring brains to basically think outside of the box because with technology, possibilities seem endless.
Artificial intelligence is another example of how technology causes brains to think less but with benefits. Artificial intelligence is the theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and translation between languages. The use of AI makes people more reliable on technology. In this point of view, the reliance of AI has many advantages. It can do dangerous tasks for the user. For example, the military has drones, that do not need a pilot to operate, which can then perform duties that are too risky for a soldier or team. On the other hand it can perform boring tasks for the user like vacuuming or assembly line labor. The point of these examples shows the innovation that was used to create such technology. Instead of flat lining with the same technology, the minds of people have been wired to think of the impossible and achieve it. People are creating AI technology to perform tasks that are complex or simple depending on the need. This shows that humans will not stop expanding on creativity or possibilities. As reported by Patrick Marshall's article, "Artificial Intelligence", smart machines are bringing new
