In this act the main characters were introduced, Jack and Algernon. In my opinion Jack and Algernon are not earnest. Because Jack lied about his name and Algernon was careless and he didn't want any responsibility.

First jack used a different identity to get to town where he met Gwendolyn and wanted to marry her. Algernon found a cigarette case, which had an engraving that read "from little Cecily with her fondest love". That made Jake upset because Algernon had the case for a long time but never mentioned it to him. And in my opinion that makes Algernon not earnest.

When Jack proposed to Gwendolyn her mother started asking him questions, which he answered quite seriously. But there was always the problem that showed him to be not earnest and that was the fact that he was lying about his true identity, which is earnest, who made him his brother. But he wanted to get rid of it by saying that he died in Paris.

Algernon heard where jack was living in the country when jack was talking to Gwendolyn, he wanted to use his other identity to go there but he thought that he will use earnest because it will be better to go into the house and meet Cecily. His curiosity led him to that which makes him not earnest.

In conclusion, I can say that jack and Algernon are not earnest. Because Jake lied about his name and Algernon also lied about his name and was not serious and sincere.
