3. Topic of the passage: Exotic and rare fruit
4. Purpose of the author: expressive and narrative.
Narrative because author describes the scene in so much detail that his audience can clearly visualize what is happening in the background. He specially explains the mangosteens on his tour. Eg.
Expressive because he explains the tastes of the mangosteens that the audience can even feel what his taste buds are experiencing. Eg.
5. The main idea: According to me the main idea is implicit, as it is not clearly mentioned at all in the passage. When the author reaches the end of the passage he gives the hint that the mangosteens are rare and delicious fruit which can only be found in Malaysia. Although due to globalization we can get anything anywhere, but buying mangoseens from street vendors in its hometown is totally different experience.
6. The tone of the essay is very easygoing and straightforward. Essay starts off with very informative tone which keeps the reader engaged, and then moves into excitement when author starts explaining about the rare fruit mangosteens. For example when the author says “But through it all, I yearned for just one exquisite taste on my tongue. I couldn’t wait to get to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s sleek capital and the last stop on my tour, where mangosteens awaited for me like a long-lost love.”The easy tone with lots of detail and characterization keeps the audience curious to keep reading. For example, “The mangosteen is not some over engineered supermarket banana. It’s not a Tropicana Twister ingredient or a Jelly Belly flavour. It’s a temperamental mistress and a genuine delicacy; a thing available only at its place of origin and too distinctive to be simulated.”
7. Trigger note: It also leaves you with something that is increasingly rare in this world of global trade.
