Abstract
Criminal Justice is in place to protect individuals, the community and to maintain order in society. It is also to promote and maintain peace. Crime is when a law is broken. Police are the first that an individual would encounter when they are introduced into the criminal justice system. Police are in charge of enforcing the law. The courts are in charge of giving everyone a fair trial and protecting rights and enforcing that an individual is innocent until proven guilty. Corrections are in place to see that those who are guilty are held accountable for their actions and to see that justice is served.
Individual Assignment Criminal Justice System Paper 3 According to Webster's Dictionary criminal is defined as, "a person guilty of a crime" (pg. 167). According to Webster's Dictionary justice is defined as, "conformity to moral principles or law; just conduct" (pg. 377). According to the President's Commission the criminal justice system is to "enforce the standards of conduct necessary to protect individuals and the community." There are three major parts to the criminal justice system legislative which creates laws, adjudication which is the court system and corrections which consist of the jails, prisons, probation and parole. The criminal justice system also could be described as the police, courts and correction. It is in place to maintain social control, to bring those who are guilty to justice and to protect those who are on trial to have a fair trial, and to be innocent until proven guilty of a crime in a court of law. According to Webster's Dictionary crime is defined as, "an offense punishable by law" (pg. 167).
Police are in place in order to protect the public, maintain social order and to enforce law. They are required to enforce local, state and federal law. Police are expected to prevent crime, solve crime, and bring criminals to justice while following the guidelines of the U.S. constitution. Police are usually the first line of criminal justice and are the first to deal with people who are entering the criminal justice system.
The second part of criminal justice is called adjudication which consists of the courts. This is where things are disputed and justice is administered. There are two types of courts the state and the federal courts. The court consists of the judge, prosecutor and defense attorney. In the U.
