An incorporated set of mechanisms is an information system that is utilize for collecting, processing, storing, and communicating information. Most businesses rely on information systems to administer their operations, compete in the marketplace, and supply services. Businesses compete in a challenging and changing environment. With the increasing amount of information organizations have to react faster to problems, opportunities, and growth. Information systems in organizations have been growing at a rapid pace along with the changing of the workforce. I will discuss how information systems support the business process in an organization and describe the business process of an organization that I am familiar with along with the strengths and weakness of the information system.
Information systems have had such an impact on the workforce and how information is used. With so much information gathered from within the organizations, the Internet can cause information to surplus. Information systems stores the data and organize data with software and hardware to produce information that is useable in some form of output if it is either displayed on the screen or reported as a document. The effect of information systems in management positions makes their job easier and provides their staff to produce the schema for the upcoming projects. It can save the managers time by collecting the information in a timely fashion for them to make a decision and reducing the time spent in the decision- making process.
In my place of employment I spend time on the computer typing documents and send files to recipients and contractors. My department uses a Dell desktop and work with Microsoft Word and Excel. Instead of signing a piece paper to start shifts, we use a program called Kronos. Kronos is an easier way to record our time transactions and manage the work schedule. My job field is in construction and our main focus works with quality control, research and development. When I am at the job site I conduct certain tests, research the conditions, and collect data. After the construction project is completed, I collect the data, calculate, and record the results.
The strengths of this information system are that the hardware is reliable and can with stand being on 24/7, 365 days of the year with very little maintenance and the software is user friendly. We also have an IT department on stand-by if there is any problem with the networks and systems. The weakness that I know with this system is that there are no back up of files to be stored off sight. We use our personal storage devices because the company does not provide certain office supplies for the department. With the loss of power our staff would have to write the information on paper and then enter the data when the power is restored.
Our organization provides us with backup systems such as copying the forms to a compact disc and storing the disc for future references.
