If I post a poem on my Facebook site and someone cuts and pastes it in their site is that a cause
for steeling my intellectual property?
Cutting and posting a poem to me is wrong. It is steeling my intellectual property. I say this
because it's the same thing as copying out bits from a textbook and putting them in an essay
without proper acknowledgment is cheating. The internet is not copyright-free. Just because
there is a copying and pasting function available to you, it does not give you the right to take
other peoples hard work and appropriate it without permission. This is true whether you
include a link back to your source; this is true whether you cite the name of the author. It is
never okay. If you don't want people to take credit for your poems then you shouldn't post
them on Facebook. If I was to put a poem on Facebook I would use watermark but then also
put it as private. This way people would know I own the poem.
What type of strategies can educators use to ensure their students are not flaming in way that
causes damage to others?
Educators should determine the prevalence of flaming, conduct a threat assessment in
response to reports of flaming that might involve violence or suicidal behaviors, and develop
programs, policies, and training to prevent and stop flaming. Educators should advise students
that they must understand and abide by law and guidelines protecting intellectual property.
Teachers should log into the course every day to review students questions and answers.
Instructors should be prepared to respond to posts from students that try flaming other
students by asking them to watch how they word what they are saying. If student keeps on
then the instructor should ask the student to explain why they wrote what they did. Students
may not have meant it the way the instructor read it. It would help if the instructor posts a
copy of the policies online. If students won't obey by the school policy then the student should
