Intelligent People Whom I Admire
Nowadays, people thought that IQ score was a good measure of a person's intelligence. However, they have discovered that IQ score really measures only mathematical and linguistic skills. So, high or low IQ scores don't mean that a person is intelligent or not. What is intelligence? University professors David Miller Sadker and Myra Pollack Sadker describe in their article "Multiple Intelligence and Emotional Intelligence" Howard Gardner's theory of "multiple intelligence" (78) Harvard professor Gardner defines intelligence as "the capacity to solve problems or to fashion products that are valued in one or more cultural settings" (gtd. in Sadker and Sadker 78) and he "identified eight kinds of intelligence" (78).
I agree with Gardner's theory because I can see these different types of intelligence among my relatives and friends. I cannot say that I grew up in the world of intelligent people around me, but in my life I met them, and there were people whom I rightfully could be called "He is an intelligent person." Even though we didn't take any IQ tests, I'm sure that some people that I've met are very intelligent and some of them have at least one of the Gardner's eight categories of intelligence.
For instance, Gardner illustrates 'logical-mathematical" intelligence: skills that show person's ability to do "mathematical manipulations" and solve "logical problems" (gtd. in Sadker and Sadker 78). My cousin has these skills. Although he did not finish any university as a mathematician, he knows math field very well and can solve mathematical problems easily. He can perform mathematical operations "on the fly." At work, his boss noticed his ability and his career began to grow rapidly. I see that his knowledge helps him and sometimes me in our life. Things such as getting a loan in bank for buying a car or a house, counting percentage or charges for building or fixing any building are very important in our life today. If we understand how this things work, we can avoid overpayments and save some money for other deal. So, my cousin is very intelligent in this category.
The next type of intelligence, according to Gardner is "Bodily-kinesthetic." What does he mean? He means "Ability to excel physically and to handle objects skillfully" (gtd. in Sadker and Sadker 78). When I think about someone who is great in this category, I think about my best friend who is professional auto mechanic. I don't know anyone whom I can compare with him in his professionalism. Others, I guess just do their job to get money, but not him. He knows his stuff. He feels the car. He hears and sees small details, for which an ordinary person did not even pay attention to. When he makes a body of work that is certainly not the strength to make the layman sees flaws, which in my opinion seem to be perfect and smooth. Once I was having come to his garage and he asked to inspect his work. He asked me to hand over the rear fender of the car which he had prepared for painting. He asked me what I feel. I answered everything perfectly smoothly. But he said no, there is a pit, and I should remove it. And when he showed it to me at a certain light it was true. I always trust him. He says, "I do not want to fix the car to a man that it had
