Business plan
According to Kuratko and Hodgetts (2004), a Business plan is the written document that details the proposed venture further explaining that it must describe current status, expected needs and projected results of the new business. The best person to write the business plan is the owner of the business that is the entrepreneur. However, Perry (2001) is of the opinion that it is important not only write an effective plan but to also translate that plan to a successful enterprise. Scarborough et el (2009) further described business plan as a written summary of an entrepreneur's proposed business venture that describes its operational and financial details, its marketing opportunities and strategy, and its managers skills and abilities. The business plan should be thought of as work in progress and not the business itself. Timmons and Spinelli (2007).
Planning a business has been basically classified into three stages by Burns (2011) as Understanding where you are, Deciding where you want to go and Planning how to get there. However, it is expected that the proposed business plan will examine this stages by examining the business current situation of the market place, the competitor, the direction intended for the business and how the company intends to implement their aims and objectives of the business.
Importance of a Business Plan
A business plan is viable to the entrepreneur, potential investors or even new personnel who are trying to familiarize themselves with the venture, it goals and objectives. Hisrich et al (2010). He further explained that a business plan is important to these people because
It helps determine the viability of the venture in a designated market
It provides guidance to the entrepreneur in organizing his or her planning activities
It serves as an important tool in helping to obtain financial information.
Reasons for Business Plan
According to Stokes and Wilson (2010) the following are the reasons for writing a business Plan.
To access the feasibility and the viability of the business or project
To set objectives and prepare budgets for the business
To calculate how much is required to establish the business
To clarify ideas by bringing together generalised and random thoughts into clearer understanding.
To find out the unknown.
