Josie is an 11 year old female of a bi racial background, who has been referred to me for issues concerning her behavior at home and school, depression, and suicidal thoughts. When speaking with Josie I find that the three issues I have stated are the ones that affect her most in her development into a young adult. Josie states that she goes to a large suburban school and the kids who attend the school are mostly of the Caucasian race who are very intelligent children.
Josie says she struggles sometimes in school and this is embarrassing and frustrating to her, which makes her upset and she begins to act out in class. Josie has mixed feelings about how she is performing in school. She says some days she cares and others she finds school a waste of time, with no intention of getting back on track with her academics. She feels that she has no purpose in this world anymore and has been having suicidal thoughts.
I have suggested Josie begin speaking with her teachers when she does not understand the assignment or task that has been designated to her. I also asked her if she would be willing to participate in the tutoring program offered at her school, if approved by the school services program. She stated she would rather be involved in the tutoring program instead of asking too many questions in class. I was also able to speak with Josie about a program called "The Boys and Girls Club". This program would provide Josie with a big brother or sister who would spend quality time with her (bcga.org). She would be in an atmosphere where she is not feeling as though she is being judged.
The boys and girls club is open every day of the week and allows unsupervised children to become involved in safe and productive activities with other children within their community (bcga.org). Josie would be able to be supervised which I think would help tremendously with her suicidal thoughts, while providing a sense of comfort for her mother that she is being attended to. She would also be able to ask for help with her school work and be involved in many more of the programs available through the Boys and Girls club. I strongly believe this program could be very beneficial for Josie by not only keeping her occupied and on task, but by teaching her the skills needed for success.
I had the opportunity to speak with Josie's mother Michele to ask her what, if any challenges she faces in getting Josie the assistance she needs. Michele explained to me that her concerns are transportation to and from the boys and girls club and medical coverage to pay for counseling sessions for her and Josie; so she can participate in Josie's success to fight depression. Michele is worried due to the fact she must work and she wants to make sure Josie has supervision now that she has stated she has been having thoughts about not living. I explained to Michele that Josie's big brother or sister could provide transportation to and from
