Lowering Drinking Age
Can 18 year olds in the United States drink alcoholic beverages? The answer is no! The majority of the states in the U.S. require citizens to be 21 with a valid state I.D. to buy and consume alcohol. By lowering the age of drinking to 18, there are many benefits to come such as it'll make it less of a taboo, make it much safer for teens to drink under supervision and since at the age of 18 they can join the military and kill others, they should have the right to drink. Drinking can save many teens lives and allows them to have responsibilities for their own actions.
By lowering the age for drinking to 18, it will make alcohol less of a taboo. What does this mean? This means that since they don't have to wait to be 21 and have that thrill of breaking the law, it wouldn't be as fun to them! The most common reason for underage drinking is because alcohol is seen as "the forbidden fruit" or as a symbol of "adulthood". In reality rising the drinking age was much worse than lowering it to 18. Drinking is more exciting when it is illegal. Many people go out and get drunk simply because they know they should not be drinking at all. They love the thrill of getting away from something illegal.
If we are considered an adult and expected to act like one at age 18 it isn't right to restrict us to a drinking age of 21. At eighteen you can drive cars, fly planes, marry, vote, pay taxes, take out loans and risk our lives as members of the U.S. armed forces. But laws in all 50 states say that no alcoholic beverages may be sold to anyone until that magic "21" birthday. Who says that twenty-one is the magical age that makes one intelligent and matures enough to consume alcohol? While 21 may be the legal drinking age in the U.S., no scientific evidence exists proving this is the age at which young people can safely begin drinking alcohol
