Atlanta, GA- In a game that saw the scoreboard operator do more pushing buttons than a middle school girl who just was handed a cell phone it was the refs who's fingerprints were on this one.
With less than 15 minutes remaining in the first half the two-standout big men found themselves watching from the sidelines because of early foul trouble. Both Anthony Davis and Cody Zellar who were both freshmen All-American selections couldn't impact the game in a way the two coaches had hoped. Cody Zellar saw less than five minutes after picking up his second foul just forty seconds after his first. And Davis sat the remainder of the half after picking up his second.
"We knew our guys could step up and carry us without Anthony (Davis) in the game." John Calipari said going into the locker room.
Kentucky who took a three-point lead into the break had to feel pretty fortunate. Indiana shot over fifty percent from the field and scored 47 points. The high paced frantic pace saw UK shoot nearly twenty free throws in the first half. It seemed like the whistle was being blown more during this game than an officer conducting traffic in downtown New York.
The second half would be a carbon copy of the first. It was a frenetic pace that would see over 100 points scored between the two. Indiana could never get over the hump after the Wildcats stretched the lead out to twelve just six minutes passed in the second half. Kentucky went on to shoot thirty-nine free throws during the game, while IU made it to the strip eighteen times. That turned out to be the difference in the game.
The two stars of the game had nothing, but compliments for the other side. Christian Wafford led the way for Indiana with a game high 27 as Kidd-Gilchrist dropped in 24 of his own.
