Writing a memoir is like giving a piece of your life to someone to help them understand you better. A memoir is picking a special memory that may be very close to you in some way and reflecting upon it; almost as if reliving the moment with every word you write. Unlike a journal or diary though, a memoir isn't only supposed to tell the way you felt in whatever situation you went through, but also writing about what other's might've went through during that situation as well.

Alicia Zadrozny in the article "You, on paper: through memoir writing, you can discover yourself" states that a memoir is like "seeing your life as a meaningful story." Which in a lot of cases is true because that is what a memoir is, a story that tells about your important and in certain cases life changing experiences in life.

A lot of times writing about something that you may feel is not very meaningful to you, can turn out a lot more important to you than you think. This happens often in cases of teens. For example Milana Meytes, a ninth grade student began writing a personal essay beginning with a picture of her when she was a baby, right before her family emigrated to the United States from Russia. And as she wrote she said, " I was surprised o see how much I was attached to and wanted to learn about my Russian identity."

Writing memoirs can bring about many changes in an individuals life, Louise DeSalvo has had this experience up close and personal. She says that she has seen students' lives change for the better after writing about themselves. I believe that writing a memoir is a wonderful experience and everybody should at least try it once.
