Men and Women's Equality
Today we live in a society in which we are given the ability to make choices for ourselves; everyone is given the same amount of rights, however some people in our country take the fact that they have the same amount of rights as everyone else lightly and argue that they are discriminated against and not treated the same. An example would be women's rights activists. I argue that women in our society today are not discriminated against. Women argue that men treat them poorly because they are women, if that is so why do men hold the door open for women? Why when a ship is sinking are women and children the first off? Why in a divorce do women receive at least half of the husband's money, most of the property, the kids, and possibly an alimony check every month? Why are women more likely to get accepted into college? The answer to all of these questions is in fact they are women, women know that if they do not receive these special benefits they are liable to file suit for sexual discrimination. My opinion is that women do not want equality they want to be the dominant ones of society.
In society today women are a part of the common workplace however women have found a way to exaggerate things in order to make people believe that they are treated unfairly. Women argue that men are given the higher paying jobs over women, when that is not always the case. Women have just as much opportunity to achieve top paying jobs as men, some examples would be Indra Nooyi, CEO of PepsiCo; Irene Rosenfield, CEO Kraft foods; Carol Bartz, CEO of Yahoo; Ellen Kullman, CEO of DuPont; Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook; and Lorrie Norrington, president of EBay (Shambora). Why are women always complaining about not ever getting top paying jobs, but you never hear about all of the lower end males in the workplace? The answer is anyone can exaggerate something to make it bigger than it is. Women say they want to hold the same jobs as men, but women really only want to hold the big paying jobs in society.
My second point on equality is the point on divorce. I always find myself asking why in a divorce the hard working husband has to give up half or more of his hard earned money in a divorce settlement. Take for instance the divorce case of Tiger Woods. Tiger had to give up one hundred million dollars (Crawford). He had to give it up his hard earned money to a wife who could not have lived the type of lifestyle she had if it were not for Tiger. You may argue that he cheated on his wife and he was in the wrong, and I would agree, however I do not believe that he should have had to give up one hundred million dollars to someone who did not earn any of that money. The next case would be the case of John Cleese and Alyce Faye in which John had to give eight million euros in cash and property plus six hundred thousand euro every year to his ex wife(times). For a wife to walk off with more money than she could have ever earned is not only wrong its obscene (Richey).
Another part of our society is the way that women are treated. Take for instance when a woman is walking into a building a man will usually attempt to hold the door open for her. Also when a ship is sinking do you know who is first entered into lifeboats? The answer is women and children. On the day the Titanic went down in 1912 as the vessel's orchestra played soothing music to calm the passengers, women and children were escorted to the limited supply of lifeboats, leaving healthy young men to go down with the sinking ship (Laura).
In colleges around the country there has been a slow decline of male students and an increase in female students. In the United States there are 15 million men and 14.2 million women according to the
