Project Management And Next Steps At HP
The company Hewlett- Packard tried to make the company competitive in the market. The company tried to do training and certification which resulted the employees to get the “Project Management Professional”. The training is done using Knowledge Management System. this training made use of the distance learning and instruction as the training that envisions the employee to measure their performance. However, the challenge for HP was the employees who undergo the said training will be retiring in the next 5 years. so the company now needs to know what is the next step to ensure not to lose the company’s market position.
Needs Assessment for project Management Staff
The first step for the effective training for program is the need for assessment. This will boost the employees’ competency that will help the company to achieve competitive advantage. The need for assessment makes the company bridge the gap of knowledge that the employees need. Then the company assigns managers who will be taking care of then clients need for training performance improvement. The need for assessment also is very important in identifying the importance of training. It helps pin point who are the people that are in need of training and what kind of training do they need. There are different kinds of training that can be performed such as E-learning, Procedural Manual, etc.
HP Issues
The main issue of HP is that all their competitors have the same training management system with the, So what Hp need is to think differently to achieve the competitive advantage. Another issue is that the employees who got trained are retiring soon while leaving the skilled position empty. What the Hp needs to work on is to plan to train new employees. This would make the company choose who are the aspiring employees that will be trained.
Training Plan Creation
The manager should have a clear objective and goal on what he/she wants to achieve in the training. The training plan sets the overall objective it identifies the area that needs further improvement. Once the objective is set, it followed by the training plan.. This will cover the topics to be discussed in the training. Once the object is set, the plan is finished then the methodology to be used should be determined. The manager should based it on the needs of the employees. The manager can also consider the size of the group that will take part in the training.
Training Plans: Large vs. Small Companies
In big company such as HP, targeting the needed ability that is needed to be improved is quite hard due to the fact that they have large number of employees. However, bigger companies has more resources in providing training. They can hire consultant before performing the training. For smaller companies, it is much easier to track who are the people who needs training since the number of the employees are quite few. There is a much higher possibility that the participation rate of the employees are high.
Summary and Conclusions
HP should make a clear objective on the “next step” that they want to take. The company should also considering that they have large number of managers should conduct a training that is group. Dividing groups into smaller number can increase the efficiency of training. The training session will be more interactive and efficient thus also making the employees who attend the training enjoy the training and not just take it as burden that they have to do.
