More than Just Animals in Cages

When it comes to the care for wild animals, zoos create a safe environment for them to live healthy and happy as they would in the wild. While caring for any animals that may be ill, zoos also have breeding programs for endangered species. So the International Trade for Endangered Species (ITES) should continue to keep zoos up to code for the safety and well-being of the animals that are kept there. There is so much more to a zoo then just entertainment.

When people attend the zoo they are getting so much more than just pictures and entertainment. "Zoos have to educate the public about the value of animals so that they understand the importance of conservation. After a fun experience at the zoo, people leave with a newfound knowledge and understanding." By visiting the zoos people get a chance to get up close and personal with the animals that live not only around them, but also around the world. In doing so many people have the opportunity to learn and even help some of their favorite animals.

With the boundaries of the "wild" becoming smaller each day." zoos create a sort of safe haven for animals. The animals are given a second chance at life, and also given the necessary resources they may need to survive. "It rained on the grand opening of the Fujifilm Giant Panda Habitat and Asia Trail exhibit at the Smithsonian National Zoological Park, but that did not bother the pandas. The famous bear family lounged and played in the downpour, enjoying their refurbished home." Millions of dollars go into the care for these creatures. When people go to visit the zoo, the money that is made goes into the care and protection for the animals that it home. Many habitats are frequently updated to make sure the animal is happy and healthy. When the animals are kept happy it makes it easier to maintain them.

With all the advances in technology scientist are always coming up with new ways to care and treat the animals kept in captivity. "The more we learn about animals, the better we can preserve them and provide for their needs." When we learn about what the animals need, we can give them a better place to live. Along with the help of zoo keepers, scientists are constantly watching the animals and their behavior in their enclosures to see what the animals like and do not like. From there they can adjust to the animal's wants and needs, So that the animals are always kept safe as well as happy.

Many people never get to see animals this close. By being able to visit a zoo, people can get a better understanding of what animals live not only around them, but around the world as well. These animals are also not only for just viewing purposes, but also for protection purposes. Zoo goers can also learn how to handle these kinds of animals if they ever come into contact with them in the wild. When visiting the zoo not only are people getting up close to some rare animals but they are also getting educated about them, and where it is these amazing creatures come from.

"The boundaries of the "wild" are becoming smaller each day." When animals are taken from captivity there is usually a reason behind it. Whether they are in immediate danger, are not able to adapt to their surroundings due to a dramatic change in climate, or if a disaster has occurred in their habitat. When animals are taken from the wild they are given a place to live that is safe but are also given any additional help they may need (ex. Medical). With the proper care and medical help, animals are kept happy and healthy in captivity. This can play a significant role in not only that animal directly, but the future of that species as well. When the animals are kept safely in captivity it ensures that the species will again survive in the wild, whether it is in the near future or in a couple years.

One reason animals may be taken from the wild is because their species may be an endangered species or they may even be close to being extinct. If this happens it is usually because there is a dramatic change in weather and the animals are not able to adapt fast enough, or it can also be that their habitat has been altered with in some way. "Many animals that are kept in captivity are put into breeding programs to assure that the wildlife population does not decline." Zoos from all around the world have these kinds of breeding programs. This means that when a zoo wants to breed one of their animals are sure to contact other zoos to find the best match for their animal. In doing so it this ensures that the offspring will come out healthy and strong because they are coming from the best genes available. When the specialists feel that the animals are ready, they are released into the wild, but are still being supervised to make sure they are able to adapt to their surroundings. By doing so zoos want to make sure that no species goes extinct, and that may even be taken off of the endangered species list. Zoos have changed in many ways in the past hundreds of years.

Zoos have been around for many many years and the conditions of their enclosures have changed. A long time ago the animals used to be a tiny space where the animals would have to stay behind metal bars, this has changed. "Over the past couple hundred years, Zoos have made updates to the enclosures for animals." Millions of dollars go into the care for these animals. Zoo keepers realize that they cannot fully mimic the wild but they try to do everything possible to make the animal feel at home. It can be as simple as putting the same plants or similar things that could be found in that specific animal's natural habitat. Zoo keepers
