Music is powerful and can be used in numerous of ways. In fact people listen to music for many different reasons daily. It can be used therapeutically, influentially, and even for just plain entertainment. Marketers, however, use music as a tool to promote business. In Houston, Texas music is used all over the market industry. To focus on a few, Houston uses music to market itself through its various forms of nightlife scenery, the rodeo, and is even known for one of its unique style of sub categorical genres.

Houston, one of the biggest cities in the United States, has a tremendous amount of nightlife scenery from concerts, clubs, and bars to name a few. All three of these use music to promote business. Without music, these three public facilities would not provide a sufficient amount of revenue to remain in business. Marketers know that music plays a huge role in promoting business especially for these three events. For example, can you imagine being at a bar or club and the music stops all of a sudden for whatever reason? Some people are going to be upset and leave. Others are going to be less likely to purchase drinks because they are not having a good time at the bar/club without music. Eventually they will leave as well. At concerts, marketers use music as a medium. If Houston, a big city, has one of the biggest artist in the industry perform at a concert, then the city would have a good business turnout. Tickets would sell out. Let us not forget about t-shirts, albums, and etc. As the reader can see, Houston uses the nightlife scenery to market itself through music.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo also uses music as a tool for marketing. Of course when you think of the rodeo you think of a specific genre, but what about the musical performances? Most notable in Rodeo Houston are the celebs and concert performances in Stand-Up, Rock, Tejano, Blues, and Hip-hop. In fact, the rodeo has drawn the world's biggest music legends. Does Elvis Presley ring a bell? He was a Houston Rodeo Performer. Each year some of the biggest names in music come to Houston to entertain the Stock Show crowd. Some may argue that the concerts are the best part of the rodeo. Marketers use this to their advantage. Everyday during rodeo season, there is a different performer from a different genre to attract the different crowds abroad to maximize revenue. This is another way that Houston uses music to market itself.

As obvious as this may seem, but even the local artists use music to help market themselves as well as Houston. In the Hip-hop industry, Houston's local rappers benefit off of its unique style of music known as "chopped and screwed". DJ Screw, born Robert Earl Davis, Jr., was the originator of the era in 1990. The phrase "chopped and screwed" comes from slowing down a music track and doing what DJs call a "scratch". This style of music has been acknowledged
