Dear Mayor Gordon:

Greetings!

Last March 8-9, 2012, the undersigned attended the 2 day Program Implementation Review on Nutrition and Micronutrient Supplementation. The PIR was facilitated by the Department of Health - Center for Health Development 3 (DOH-CHD3).

The activity aims to identify areas for improvement to sustain program gains and further improve program management to support the achievement of millennium development goal No. 4, under five Mortality reductions by 2015.

The following topics and recommendations were discussed during the PIR;

TOPICS RECOMMENDATIONS

Nutrition Program Assessment (See Attachment A)

Based on the accomplishment report of the City, coverage of the Vitamin A Supplementation ranges from 80.4% to 97.3% from 2009 to 2011. However, the deworming coverage range from 52.1% to 82.4% * Improve coverage of Vitamin A Supplementation by establishing "PATAK CENTERS" in public places

* Improve Deworming coverage by information drive on the importance of taking anti-helminth drugs.

* Conduct of mass deworming to all City/Barangay employees, food handlers, inmates, and other high risk groups.

* Legislative support on the empowerment of deworming program of the city

Infant and Young Child Feeding

IYCF - training for health personnel on breastfeeding and proper complementary feeding methods for children. However, Olongapo City has not been trained because of limited resources.

* Conduct Infant and Young Child Feeding training for health workers

EO 51: Milk Code (See Attachment B)

The milk code or EO 51 is a law which protects and promotes breastfeeding. The Milk Code restricts health facilities and workers to allow infant formula or milk representatives, feeding bottles and teats, posters and leaflets of infant formula, and other promotional materials. Any donations, financial or material provision, trainings, scholarships, etc. are not allowed according to the Milk Code.

Persons who violate the code may be penalized through imprisonment for 2months to year; fined of not less than P1, 000.00 to P30, 000; Suspension or revocation of license, permit or authority issued by the government.
