Facts:

Jane Jones is an entry-level employee in the Controller's Department of ABC Co. Everything went well for several days until she met accounts payable accounting manager who just has three years staying in the company before his retirement. Jane fell the manager is rude, arrogant and unfriendly. Jane talked the "clash at first sight" with her supervisor, but the supervisor told her not to mention this incident, because that manager was always like that. Jane may have to work closely for him in the following years.

Issues:

1) How would Jane deal with this situation?

2) Is the behavior of the "office grouch" unethical?

Solutions:

1)

Try to ignore the incident.

Although the accounts payable manager is difficult, as supervisor said, he was simply "that way", he is not malevolent. Jane can learn to treat him tolerantly and benevolently. Whatever, he is Jane's superior and he will be retired. Jane just needs to endure him 3 years.

Stand up to him, but don't fight.

Jane can assertively express her views, but avoid the battle of right and wrong. If she needs to discuss issues, don't put manager on the defensive. This is flirting with danger to her career.

Take actions to improve relationship between them.

Jane can start from finding the common point with the manager's interest and hobbies, or if possible, try to listen to him about the problem which bothered him. Pull down the hedge between you.

Quit Job or move to other department.

If Jane cannot endure the manager any more, she can ask for moving to other department or even quit her current job and find another company.

2)

We think the manager's behavior is ethical. Because in this case, Jane felt the manager is rude and arrogant, but this is just her own feeling. Also, everyone has his own character, we should respect for humanity.
