Persuasive Thinking

The telephone is ringing the person on the other end is from a nonprofit organization wanting a donation for terminal ill children. First, the recipient of the call did not want or like to talk to telemarketers. The receipt allows the telemarketers to speak because the telemarketer is trying to speak for the terminal ill children. The recipient looks at the bright shinning faces of her three children and tries to possible image if one of them were very sick. As her heart softens the telemarketer is persuading her to make a donation to their organization. The telemarketer finds that seeking donation for the terminal ill children is a job very easy to do because it plays a toll on the emotions of the person being called. The telemarketer finds it very easy to persuade people to donate there hard earned money. The power of persuasion is a power tool. Persuasion means influencing someone to accept out message (Kirby and Goodpaster). Persuasion seems to be very easy when looking at the telemarketer's job but when persuasion is used more critical it can be a challenge. Why is persuasion important to critical thinking and what are some guidelines that can be followed to making persuasion a little easier?

Persuasive thinking can be beneficial in critical thinking in a number of aspects. The first being persuasive thinking calls upon a higher level of thinking just like critical thinking does; second it forces one to think in concept because organizational structure requires one to connect ideas though a hierarchy of thesis; and third it teaches one to be creative and think of alterative to problems instead of analyzing those of others (Burkhalter). In other words, to persuades someone to believe in a given cause the first thing to look at is the cause, gather as much data and knowledge about the cause so persuasion is easy. Research is of the utmost importance. Look into the demographics of the area and clients feel most passionate about. Gather the cold hard facts and make the cause something to believe in. These are all tools that can persuade them to the needed cause. So how can the persuader improve their skills?

Things that are important to improve persuasion skills are credibility, tone, a clear presentation, supportive evidence, knowledge of the listeners, self-interest in topic, logic, and emotional appeal, according to kemps creative happiness blog. Credibility is essential to persuasive thinking. If the audiences can not trust the presenter the persuasion tactics are finished before the presenter even starts. That is why reliable information and trustworthiness is so important.

Tone is just as important. If the presenter comes off demanding, undermining, disrespectful the presenter can lose the audiences. Using a respectful tone, playing on the emotion of the audience and adding in personal experience to tone may help win over the audience. Ask a mother with
