John's and his parents' relationship are not very close and they do not know each other very well. They do not trust or care for each other and show bad attitude toward each other or other people (do not show respect). In the story, John calls his parents Old Lady (mom) and Bore (dad). If John and his parents have a close and caring relationship, John would not call his parents a "bad" name like Old Lady and Bore. Also, the family lies to each other. John tells his parents ridiculous stories and lies to other people to get away with thing. Bore brags how he phoned up a car-insurance claim to get $100 to replace a piece of aluminum of their new car which he replaced himself. Old Lady tells the store clerk that he or she forgot to give her Green Stamps the last time she was in. Another reason is that Bore was an alcoholic drinker when John was little and he set a bad example to John. If Bore cared about his son, he would have not drunk alcohol beverages in front of his son since alcohol is bad for you and he would not want his son to drink it. Lorraine, John's best friend has an idea of the cause of the problem between John and his parents.

Lorraine thinks the cause of the problem between John and his parents is that they showed bad examples when John was little and John was influenced by it which made him do bad things like what they do. Also John's parents do not punish John when he does something bad and cannot help him the way they should since they also do it, too. In the story, Lorraine tells the readers that when John tells a lie to his parents, they do not punish or do anything to him even if they know that he is lying because they also lie. Also Lorraine says that John's drinking was caused by his dad's drinking when he was little, thinking it was the sign of maturity. I also think the cause of the problem is that the John's parents and John do not try to get to know each other and does not hang out with each other often. The parents of John do not seem like they care about John to much and is not concern with his drinking and bad behavior. Since they do not try to get along or get to know each other, they can not trust or have a close relationship. I agree with Lorraine about this problem.

I agree with Lorraine opinion about the cause of the problem between John and his parents. One reason I think Lorraine's opinion is right is that if parents do not care and do not punish their child when they do a bad thing, the child will think that they can do the same bad thing again since no one yelled or said stopped them. This may be the cause of John doing bad things and then having a bad attitude with his parents. Also another reason why I think Lorraine is right is that when kids are in young age, they are easily influenced in doing something that looks fun especially when an adult or parents do it since they think it is the sign of maturity. This may be the cause of John bad
