o EPA role is to respond to spill that threaten or impact inland water as for NOAA have five primary goals in spills which is conduct services, keep seafood safe, protect wild life, asses damage, and restore habitat
o In every law or act there's a penalty if the law is broken there is a charge of $25,000 per day violation or $1,000 per barrel that is spilled. The maximum that any individual can get charged is $250,00 in case an oil spills happens
o Each company should have a plan and that plan should be approved by the EPA, US coast Guard, and the president
History and Background
o Exxon Valdez oil spill occurred on March 24, 1989 in Prince William Sound in Alaska
o 11 million gallons were lost in the spill
o The OPA was signed by President George H Bush After all the damages that happen Exxon agreed to pay over $ 1 billion and to restore the land, wildlife, and other resources affected by the spills
Current Situation
o The Oil Pollution Act was used one year ago in the Deep Horizon
