Greek mythology has always been a fascinating subject to inquire about, the imagination and belief that at one point in history our world was ruled by Gods and Goddess's is astonishing. To think that the land and the waters now claimed by nations, was once ruled over by fierce over powerful beings. Poseidon, also known as Neptune, was known as one of the strongest more powerful Gods that ever walked the planet. Poseidon is most known for keeping and maintaining the seas, and being the creator of great shakes, also known as earthquakes, and great storms, around the world. Poseidon was also the creator of the Horse; he also taught mankind how to use the new animal. Poseidon is the God of the Sea.
Greek Mythology legends have it starting off in the beginning with one God and one Goddess, Uranus, God of the sky, and Gaia, Goddess of the earth. They fell in a deep love for each other. They were bound together in holy matrimony as a sign of there appealing loving for each other. Within this love they conceived twelve offspring or children. There offspring or children where named Oceanus, Coeus, Crius, Hyperion, Iapetus, Cronus, Thea, Rhea, Themis, Mnemosyne, Phoebe, and Tethys.
Soon after the offspring where born problems started to arise. Uranus wasn't happy with his offspring. He felt threatened by there potential for power. He knew eventually they would grow up and seek the power of his throne. He then came up with a plan hiding his children deep inside of Giai, far away from himself and his kingdom. "And he used to hide them all away in a secret place of Earth so soon as each was born, and would not suffer them to come up into the light: and Heaven rejoiced in his evil doing. But vast Earth groaned within, being straitened, and she made the element of grey flint and shaped a great sickle, and told her plan to her dear sons" (Hesoid Theogony). Giai wasn't too pleased with this idea but she agreed with this in the beginning but then she started to change her mind. She started to want her children more than her husband and she decided to give her solidarity to her children. She wanted to give her children everything in both the heavens and the earth. Giai devised a plan to vanquish Uranus from his children's presence, so they no longer had to live with the threats, of there lives from their father. Eventually the twelve offspring paired off into two, male and female, too produce streams, rivers, moons, and other offspring.
Cronus and Rhea where siblings but they were also lovers, they conceived offspring that we today know as the Olympians. Rhea was referred to as Great Mother because she is the mother of Demeter, Hades, Hera, Hestia, Poseidon, and Zeus. Poseidon was the eldest of the six. Cronus was afraid of the power and strength that his offspring may have, so he devised a plan to swallow all of the offspring, similar to his father. He swallowed all of the offspring but when Zeus was born Rhea tricked him, and gave him a stone instead, dressed like a new born. When Zeus grew older with the helps of his mother, destroyed Cronus. Zeus felt that since he had defeated his father that he should have the ultimate power to rule over everything but his siblings did not agree. This was the start of the never ending power struggle.
After Zeus defeated his father, Cronus, there was a draw for power between the Gods. Zeus drew first and received the best of places to rule. He become ruler of the other Gods. He was also God of the sky, and his most treasured weapon was the lightening bolt. He used it against people who mocked him and displeased him. Poseidon got the 2nd best place to rule, he was named King of the sea and everything in and around it. He has the power create major storms, tidal wives, and etc. His most popular weapon was his trident that fulfilled the power of the sea. Then lastly loosing the draw Hades won the underworld, his power is strength on the death and pain of the humans that Zeus created.
