Individuals who experience life within an institution can either have a positive or negative impact depending on the circumstances they are under. The institution may also effect the individuals behaviour and beliefs either causing them to comply or protest against the situation. Scott Monks novel 'RAW' portrays a teenager, Brett Dalton, The protagonist, who has a very negative outlook on life, causes a lot of mischief and always protests against all the rules. In the beginning we see Brett Dalton who was arrested for shoplifting a bottle-shop and was sent to a juvenile detention centre also known as 'The Farm' as a result.Within the novel Brett had always chosen to protest against the rules, Sam , The owner of The Farm, had provided him, he chose not to comply and participate in activities and didn't want anything to do with the other boys at the farm. But as time progressed he seemed to have a more positive outlook and started complying as a result. '28 Days' a film produced by Celia D. Costas, focuses on Gwen Cummings, a newspaper columnist who was obliged to go enter a rehabilitation centre for 28 days for a drug and alcohol addiction. We also see Gwen as extremely resistant as to taking part in any of the treatment programs they have to offer and refusing to admit that she is an alcoholic but as time progressed we see her change her outlook and she started complying when her experiences became more positive and having people as a role model to change.Scott Monks novel 'RAW' along by '28 Days' produced by Celia D. Costas, both show many comparisons between the institutions. These include Family, Relationship and the Actual Rehabilitation centre they were sent to as a result of
Scott Monk and Celia D. Costas clearly show a variety of aspects on the individual against the rehabilitation and their experiences within. Often at the rehabilitation centre Gwen Cummings was sent to, frequently had prayer and group meetings with the other patients, Gwen always had a negative and sarcastic attitude and mostly protested against being apart of the treatment. Each patient had rules to abide by, keeping their room clean, and to participate in chores, and not to leave the premises. Gwen was frowned upon due to the interference of treatment to other patients who were able to comply with the rules."Heres five dollars, I don't intend on cleaning all week". Similar in Monks novel Raw, Brett Dalton had been given the rules of The Farm. "No fighting, no leaving the property, Sam's word is final and no drugs". "Breakfast at seven, dinner at seven, don't be late or you will miss out". Each of the boys at The Farm had to comply and contribute to cleaning up, and other chores. Brett had every intention of breaking rules and protesting against every positive outcome with the opportunities Sam had to offer.
