* What is the overall storyline and setting of the television program? Who are the main characters?
I chose to do my final essay on a movie that a lot of people would call a bad movie. The name of the movie is American History X. The main characters in the movie are two brothers named Derrick and Danny Vineyard. Derrick is Danny's older brother. The two brothers lost their father and they blamed it on an African American. After the death of their father Derrick joined a skinhead gang named the D.O.C. Growing up Derrick was a straight a student all through school but his father was started talking racial and after his death Derrick changed and became a whole different person. Derrick was always causing trouble. One night Derrick and his girlfriend were home and Danny caught two African Americans trying to break into Derrick's car so he ran and told him. Derrick went running out side with a gun to confront them and ended up killing both of them. Derrick ended up going to prison for 3 years. After Derrick was sent to prison Danny felt that he had to follow in his older brothers footsteps so he joined the same gang that Derrick was part of the D.O.C and was always getting into trouble. While Derrick was serving his 3 year prison sentence he was reformed and became a whole new man a man that wasn't against different races. He became good friends with African Americans and Hispanics while in prison. Danny was asked to write a research paper for school and being a young skinhead Danny chose to write his paper about Hitler titled Mein Kempf. He ended up getting in trouble for writing the paper and was told by the principal to write another paper on his brother Derrick. Well at this time Derrick was being released from prison and found out about the paper and Danny joining the D.O.C. Derrick then tried to reform his younger brother it took him a while but he was successful in reforming Danny. It was just too bad he couldn't do it sooner because in the end Danny get shot and killed by an African American boy in the boy's bathroom at school.
* Does the program portray the main or supporting characters in a stereotypical manner in terms of race, ethnicity, or gender? If yes, describe the stereotypes and explain how the stereotypes might promote prejudice and discrimination. If the program does not seem to promote stereotypes, explain how it was able to avoid doing so.
I would definitely saw that the movie portrays the characters in a stereotypical manner. The stereotypes that were portrayed were that there were two white brothers that did not like African Americans or Hispanics. The stereotype that was portrayed would absolutely promote prejudice and discrimination. The reason why I say that is because when somebody labels themselves as a skinhead and tattoos swastikas on their body they a most definitely racist. People can be stereotyped from many different things such as if the
