The purpose of any profession is to serve society by effectively delivering a necessary and useful specialized service. Such as a profession in medicine and law, these professions are very important to what our society needs. In order to fulfill our societies needs, those who take on such professions need some type of specialized education and training. Throughout, each profession establishes a unique subculture that separates practitioners from the rest of the society. Professions create their own standards of performance and codes of ethics to maintain effectiveness. They develop a different vocabulary, establish journals or manuals, and maybe embrace different forms of dress. In exchange for holding their membership to high technical and ethical standards, society grants professionals a great deal of soverignty. Although, the profession of an American soldier is different from other professions, both as an institution and with respect to its individual members.Unsurprisingly, the consequences of failure in the profession of a soldier, both individual members of the Armed Forces and the Nation, are more detrimental and dire than those in any other. Most professions serve individual clients. The military serves the Nation. Our actions impact broadly in extent and consequences: the recovery of a community devastated by natural disaster, the defeat of enemy forces and of course, the security of our Nation. American military professionals work, study, and train throughout their careers to ensure that our military profession as soldiers, will not fail when we are called for duty.
