Assignment outline:

Through in class exercises; the viewing of a video; and communicating and collaborating within small and large groups students will learn about the nature of biases and stereotyping that could be influenced by power, privilege and discrimination.

Group work:

Three (3) group workshops/exercises will be completed in class, and students will be graded on their participation and contribution to the workshops/exercises. These group work exercises will assist the students to examine personal and professional practices through an equity lens.

At mid semester (Week 7) students will complete an in class case study (individually). It will address topics that have been covered in class, however the case study will focus on real life scenarios, in particular ones that may present themselves in a child care environment or in an ECE college classroom.

Preparation: Week 5 - 7

* Assignment discussion

* Viewing of the video Crash (Haggis, 2004).

* Analysis of some of the underlying messages of the movie

* Discussion relating to prejudice and stereotyping,

* Examination of our personal lenses,

* Identifying and addressing inequitable power relations

* Group workshops/exercises

* Real life scenarios that relate to child care

* Completion of case study at mid semester

*

* Warning - Some scenes from the video are harsh and realistically true.

Case study:

In order to prepare for the mid semester case study, you will need to be present in class for the video viewing and analysis discussion; class teaching; and in-class group exercises, prior to the case study please refer to the topic outline for these assignment exercises.
