SILVIO NAPOLI AND SCHINDLER INDIA

17770. SILVIO NAPOLI AT SCHINDLER INDIA (A) HARVARD CASE STUDY 303086.

This paper provides a Berkeley Research analysis and a case solution of a Harvard Business School case study (303086) by Michael Y. Yoshino and Perry L. Fagan on global management and international expansion at Swiss elevator and escalator manufacturer, Schindler Holdings Limited. The case focuses on difficulties and challenges faced by Silvio Napoli, general manager at Schindler's new India start-up, as he struggles to implement Schindler's business plan for the Indian market. The analysis considers whether or not Silvio was a good choice for managing Schindler's India venture; evaluates Silvio's performance to date taking the perspective of Luc Bonnard; makes recommendations on how Silvio should handle specific challenges related to non-standard orders, transfer pricing and limited technical cooperation from the European plants; and argues that Silvio must now alter the strategy for Shindler India that he developed when he was in the company's Swiss headquarters.

Please analyze the case based on the issues identified below.

ISSUES FOR ANALYSIS:

* How would you evaluate Silvio Napoli's strategy for Schindler in India? What are the pros and cons of the strategy? Should Silvio consider a strategy based on customization for the Indian market? Why? Why not?

* As Luc Bonnard how would you evaluate Silvio's first seven months as general manager of Schindler's Indian subsidiary? What are his achievements? What concerns do you have re his performance?

* Was Silvio the right choice for general manager of Schindler's India operations? Why? Why not? What would you do with Silvio Napoli (Leave him alone? Bring him back to his old job at headquarters? Coach him?)

* Should M.K. Singh be asked to head of the Indian operations of Schindler? Why? Why not?

* What can we learn from Silvio Napoli's experiences in India?
