Reflection Paper for Culture Project on the Amish

For my culture project, I decided to choose the Amish as I feel they are a fascinating community. It is amazing to me they live without most modern conveniences that are necessities to the industrialized world. I have also been to Lancaster, PA and enjoyed touring the area.

When I started this project, I thought I had a lot of knowledge about the Amish. However, as I continued with my research, I quickly came to the conclusion that I had a lot to learn ahead of me. While I enjoyed gaining more knowledge about this culture and feel I spent many hours doing research for my project, there is much more information to be learned about the Amish community. Another trip to an Amish community is now certainly in my future.

After completing the project, I learned the Amish are all about community and family. While they are simple people, they seem to have great morals and values. Their sense of family and community should serve as a reminder how more together the world was hundreds of years ago with much less chaos than today. I was left wishing I could live in a simpler world at times.

The project highlighted how much diversity is important. Understanding each individual is unique and having our individual differences makes this world more interesting. Each person needs to be celebrated for their individualism without prejudice to their race, ethnicity, gender, age, religious or political beliefs, sexual orientation, physical abilities, or socio-economic status.
