* Congress is taking on phosphorus, with bills to limit the nutrient in dishwashing detergents and household cleaning products.

* Phosphorus is blamed for fueling the growth of smelly muck that fouls shorelines in Saginaw Bay and across the Great Lakes

* The nutrient is essential to plant and animal life, but excess amounts can create dense algal blooms that rob water of oxygen, kill fish and make people sick.

Significance to project:

1. It shows that this is a worldwide awareness

2. The fact that congress had to pass a bill, means this threatens the lakes ecosystem
