Romeo and Juliet Character Analysis

In Act 1, Scene 3, Lady Capulet has sent for Juliet to discuss about marriage. Paris has fallen in love with Juliet and wishes to marry her, but Juliet has no interest in him or marriage. During this conversation, the Nurse gives a little speech about how she knows why Juliet is not fourteen. This will definitely add a lot of suspense and hatred into the plot since Paris is in love with Juliet while Juliet is not. Later in the play Juliet will fall in love with Romeo and will also end up marrying him in secret. Paris will be jealous if he finds out and will want to kill Rome and take Juliet for himself.

The key purpose of this scene is to show us that Paris is in love with Juliet and that her parents want her to marry Paris. The problem is, she does not want to marry him and later falls in love with Romeo. Romeo is a Montague and Paris will not let them alone. Also, her parents will definitely do something about them, especially when they want her to marry Paris, and since they hate the Montagues with a passion. The key purpose for character development in this scene shows us what type of characters the Nurse, Lady Capulet and Juliet are and what personalities they portray. This is all important because it foreshadows what each character might do or say, and whether they are kind and caring, or cruel and inconsiderate. The scene also shows us how Lady Capulet is sort of inconsiderate and uncaring about Juliet and her life, while the Nurse knows much and loves Juliet like she herself is Juliet's mother. It demonstrates how Lady Capulet does not know much about her own daughter.
