Ian

A very interesting character in the book " Saint Maybe" is Ian Bedloe. At the beginning of the book Ian is a very normal teenager. He had a girlfriend (Cicely) which had a long relationship with her, all through high school and the first years of college. Ian was the kind of teenager who was responsible and liked to help his family when they needed him, but also he liked to spent time with his friends and girlfriend. He had goals and aspirations like many other young persons of his age.

Ian's brother-Danny met Lucy and married her. She had two babies and later she had a baby named Daphne. Ian loves those children and he like to spent time with them. In a very hard episode in the book for Ian, Danny and Lucy died. At that time Ian was already and college living far from home. The children didn't have other family besides Bee, Dough and Ian. Bee and Doug- Ian's parents were old and to take care of the children was a really big job for them. Therefore Ian decided that he had a responsibility to look after Agatha, Thomas and Daphne, and resign college and went back home. This was a really brave decision that Ian made. Normally people decide to continue with their plans, goals and forget about their families and persons that need them but Ian had courage and was really brave to make a big decision to resign to his dreams, to do a good act of love and care.

Ian dedicated his entire young hood to take care of the children. Ian got a job with Mr. Brant, as a carpenter and after work he always went home and helped his mom with the children and their homework. Ian practically was the children`s father. He didn`t have friends and girlfriend anymore. He didn`t have a social life neither, all he did was to look after the children's wellbeing.

One time Ian found a church that interested him "The Church of The Second Chance" he became a member and he followed the rules closely. He restrained himself of drinking, smoking, having sex without marriage, and even having sugar. He search for the forgiveness of God because he believed he was the responsible of his brother`s dead.

I admire Ian because normally people don`t restrain themselves. They break the rules of their church and don't sacrifice their dreams, goals, and aspirations for other people. Ian had a lot of strength and courage for what he did. He was a really good person and he gave Agatha, Thomas and Daphne the love and support they needed to go on in life and to get far in life. He grew these children as his own and made them better persons because of his love and care. The circumstances in life change our plans and goals for the future and many of us choose the easiest way but Ian had the courage to choose the hard way to continue and at the end he found happiness and he was around people that loved him.
