SC Johnson and Sustainability

"We will display leadership in the pursuit of this goal by complying with applicable requirements and applying best practices to prevent pollution, conserve resources, and by assessing and addressing our risks and impacts" (Johnson, Inc., 2011). SC Johnson is a great example of a company that focuses on sustainability and environmentally friendly products. Not only is SC Johnson "a family company," they have worked hard to implement practices that reduce waste, reduce the use of harsh chemically in their products, reduce waste, and keep communities safe. They also have a health, safety and environmental policy who's main focus is being "committed to providing a safe and healthy workplace and protecting the environment in the communities where we operate" (Johnson, Inc., 2011).

The sustainability values I look for in a company include not only focusing on waste management, but also conservation policies, safe products, and a vision for maintaining social responsibly well into the future. SC Johnson works hard to also strive for such values. "A clear and compelling vision gets people excited and also provides business with some certainty about the future" (Hitchcock and Willard, 2009, pg. 115). The largest example of SC Johnson fulfilling their vision towards sustainability is the creation of their classification system called "Greenlist." SC Johnson worked together with the earth Protection Agency to create a system "that evaluates the impact of thousands of raw materials on human and environmental health" (Johnson, Inc., 2011). The use of this product has eliminated millions of pollutants from their products. This also goes along with the Hitchcock and Willard philosophy that "sustainability can help you develop new products or processes that can be part of the solution" (Hitchcock and Willard, 2009, pg. 5). SC Johnson licenses Greenlist royalty-free to other companies who want to use the system for their personal products. Because Greenlist is royalty-free, SC Johnson will help eliminate millions of pollutants, making various products in all sorts of industries safer for people and the environment (Johnson, Inc., 2011).

The company also provides all sorts of free energy saving and recycling tips to its customers and has set fantastic goals to reduce their carbon footprint. For example, they have almost achieved all of their current goals of reducing waste and emissions. They also look to "source 40 percent of total electricity usage worldwide from renewable energy by 2011" (Johnson, Inc., 2010).

Overall, I am extremely impressed with SC Johnson and their focus on people, quality products, and preserving the world we live in. I would be happy to work for SC Johnson for a number of reasons in addition to their focus on sustainability and the environment. The first reason is because
