Week 2
Reading-Last week we introduced our first SuperKid, Cass who loves to cook. Each SuperKid has their own book with various activities developing letter-sound correspondence, correct formation of the upper and lower case Cc. We used our ice-cream paper and ice cream white boards to practice. Wednesday we will finish Unit 1 with an audio story about Cass and her cooks! We will have lively discussions and do an activity related to the story. Hopefully you have set up your account and you can view the "Superkids Parent Portal" on www.rowlandreading.org.
Math-Our first unit is on "Sorting". The study of sorting, or classification, enables young children to connect mathematics to their everyday life. Classifying objects involves children in decision making about how to differentiate and categorize objects by common attributes. It also helps to develop logical reasoning. Sorting by more than one attribute and developing their own sorting rules help children develop the kind of flexible reasoning that is essential as they progress to more complex aspects of mathematics.
Science-We begin with Life Science. Unit 1 which we started last week is about the essential needs of plants and animals. The focus this week is on living and non-living things. I enhance the lesson with a variety of Discovery Chanel and UTube videos.
Social Studies-Unit 1 is "Being a Good Citizen". We will be discussing rules and why we need them. Friday we will focus on the holiday Labor Day, its meaning and origin.
Religion- My goal for your students is to prepare them to go to Mass by September 25th. We will tour the church 2 times this week and watch a "Guardian Angel" video and learn the Guardian Angel prayer.
Art- The students will trace their hand and an assortment of items on card stock. Next they use crayons to draw a pattern inside the objects and finish by painting over the patterns with water color paints.
