"School Uniforms"

Public school system across the country is now requiring students to wear uniforms. In 1996 President Clinton endorsed public school uniform in his State of the Union Address. He said "if it means that teen-agers will stop killing each other over designer jackets, then our public school should be able to require their students to require school uniforms."(NY times) This created anger among some education critics, saying that if you take away a child's self expression through clothing, you force that child to express his or herself in other ways.

In todays society students are fighting each other in school because of the other students that wear rival gang colors and clothing. Uniforms eliminate gang clothing, baggy pants, halter top, short shorts, and help identify outsiders within a school. School uniforms can also help curb some of the violence and have students more focus on school work, rather than worrying about what the other person has on. The uniforms can also help parents save money.
