Self-Assessment #1

Competency: Solving Problems

Developmental Need: I think my skills in solving problem need to be improved. I usually find a hard time solving problems, where I have to get all sides satisfied. Also, I sometimes find myself in hard position, where I have to choose one best solution to solve the problem. I do not know if what I am going to choose is going to be the best solution or not, or if it is going to affect on some but not all. For example, in our group project (applied project), my group and I were finding difficulties with one my teammates. At the beginning of the semester, he conformed us that the best way to communicate with him is Facebook, however, he showed us the opposite. He did not reply to any of our posts.  Also, he does not attend our meetings even after at the end of each seminar, where it still should be a part of the class.  And when he attended one of them he did not contribute or show that he is here. I think the main problem is that my group and I did not try enough talking to him and find out why he does not contribute with the group.

Course material: When I thought about this problem, I decided to apply the PrOACT Model, and see how it is going to work effectively with this problem.

Application:  I went back to my notes from the seminar session, and looked for each and how to apply it. Problem Identification, I found that the problem is him not us, we agreed with him the best communication way to contact him with. Objectives, I post in our Facebook group regularly, such as reminder, notes about meetings, when and where we have to meet, … etc. Alternatives, my group and I decided to talk to him after seminar, where we can find him and provide him with the updates about our project, so he be knowledge about what we will do when we meet to do and record the video. Consequences, he actually did not show up in the meeting, when we decided to do and record the video. Although I saw him earlier before our meeting, he tried to avoid talking or contacting me.

Outcome: In fact, I cannot decide if this PrOACT Model was effective on him, however, I think if the person was disregardful and careless, this will definitely will not be effective. Also, I cannot decide because I am not sure if he did read or saw our posts on Facebook since we only see him once a week if he attend the seminar. However, I tried to apply this PrOACT Model for my other course in order to solve a problem, and it seems to be effective applying it step by step and at the end getting the desired results.

Implications: After this group project, I have applied and seen how applying learned method seems to be working for effective results. Although it didn’t work with my group member, I think it should be effective from both sides. However, applying this method in another course was having successful results, which I was hoping for. Based on my results for this situation in with my teammate, the implications of implementing found is that this method needs to be applicable form both sides and both of us needs to collaborator with each other. However, it seems to be effective when I tried it with different situation. I hope that my team and I did all what we had to do to him before getting this result.

Self-Assessment #2

Competency: Building Relationships by Communicating Supportively

Developmental Need: I have good communication skills, however, I think I need to improve them as I am going along with more and bigger group projects. I learned new skill from my seminar, which is called ‘Elevator Pitch’. This is a very good short and effective method I think that everyone should have know how to apply it perfectly. It presents ideas quickly, cogently, and effectively in a very short amount of time. For example, this method could be useful for my group project in this course. This would be effective when we do not have time to meet, and we spend the last 20-30 minutes of our seminar to work on the video project. This will give everyone a chance to speck and present his/her idea on how to build our Rube Goldberg Machine, and at the same time we use time wisely. Instead of one of us talk and all agree, this will let us all talk and all be satisfied of the final idea.

Course material: For the next time we met in the seminar, we applied this method ‘Elevator Pitch’ and this let everyone to present his/her idea. After gathering all the ideas, we come up with one final idea.

Application:  Before I read the textbook or attend the lecture or seminar, I thought that communication skills is the very known skills that helps us to reach and understand each other. However, there are many skills that I learned in this class that we should apply today’s projects and what is coming in the future. In our meetings we make sure that everyone understands what we suppose to do and how we should apply it. For the Rube Goldberg design, everyone had his/her time to come up with a design that he/she thinks would be applicable for the project. This give everyone a chance to apply his/her idea, and then we choose the best that all of us agree with and ready to apply. I think this spread the fairness in between the team members and satisfy everyone is contributing.
