To begin with, I guess one could ask themselves what exactly is Six Sigma and how can it help in their everyday life. Well, upon completion of reading chapter 5 of the 18th edition of the text Crafting and Executing Strategy by Arthur A. Thompson, Margaret A. Peteraf, John E. Gamble, and A.J. Strickland III, we learn that "Six Sigma programs utilize advanced statistical methods to improve quality by reducing defects and variability in the performance of business process." (Thompson et al, pg 369) One article I found interesting is located on the web entitled Marines sharpen warfighting skills with business management strategies was written by Sgt Raymond Lewis. This struck my attention primarily because I too am active duty military and wanted to see how a business strategy could possibly help with military operations. It would seem based on this article, applying these six sigma strategies helped "The Marine Corps to decrease discrepancies to improve mission readiness." This was done through a course of different belt levels (Yellow, Green, Black and Master Black Belt) which taught them different strategies at different levels.

The article explains "Yellow Belt certification provides an overall insight to the techniques of Six Sigma, its metrics, and basic improvement methodologies. The Green Belt provides participants with enhanced problem-solving skills, with an emphasis on the DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control) model. Black Belt provides participants with a thorough knowledge of Six Sigma philosophies and principles (including supporting systems and tools), according to sixsigmaonline.org, and Master Black Belt level focuses on advanced Six Sigma statistic methods." All these different levels enhanced the Marines battle rhythm, planning process, and execution of the thought out plan. Applying all those strategies at the levels in which they are learned allows the Marines to "support warfighting excellence with well-managed operations that are both effective and efficient, said Gen. James F. Amos, the Commandant of the Marine Corps." Through the use of Six Sigma implementation, the Marines are reaping the benefits of a better planning and execution process which minimizes discrepancies and improve their mission readiness whether it be in combat or in garrison.

Another article which again caught my attention due to its military affiliation is also found on the web entitled US Army Uses Cloud Email System to Make Efficiency Savings was written by Adi Gaskell. This article explained how through the use of a lean Six Sigma strategy, the army was able to cut costs and improve
