Software Applications and Information Systems

Software applications and information systems are computer programs and systems designed to help people perform specific tasks. Examples would be accounting software, media players, and graphics software. This paper will address how accounting, human resources, and marketing programs and systems assist the organization departments within a company.

Accounting

In ancient China the abacas was used for basic bookkeeping and in more recent times accounting was done manually with several pages of information used to record transactions and ultimately provide financial reports regarding the company. In both cases the work was time-consuming and in many cases inefficient. The invention of information systems specifically programmed for accounting functions increased the ease of data input, which in turn permitted increased productivity and efficiency. Accounting information systems allow a company to produce financial statements, manage cash flow reporting, input payables and receipts, and make payments all at the touch of a button. With all the necessary financial information available many companies can increase their purchases, sales and other transactions that allow for growth and expansion.

Human Resources

The Human Resources Information System (HRIS) is normally based on the needs of the company. Basic information systems used in the human resources division help with the tracking of employee data such as payroll, recruiting, compensation, employee evaluations, and the creation, and implementation of company policies and procedures. The human resources department also has easy access to data that will ensure that the company is current and compliant with all civic, state and federal regulations and laws.

Marketing

The invention of the World Wide Web has given marketing departments access to vast amounts of data. Companies such as Database Systems Corporation provide marketing software and phone systems to allow for better customer communication by allowing a customer to obtain product information by either phone or online (Database Systems Corporation, 2010). The data that marketing acquires allows the department to know what will work best for the company.

Conclusion

In today's fast paced society software applications and information systems have helped departments within companies to streamline their work, which in turn increases the company's productivity, support decision making, and ensure future growth.
