Informative and Persuasive Speech Assignments for English 230

General information for both speeches:

* speakers must provide outlines for speeches

* speeches must be 5-7 minutes long

* speeches must include a PowerPoint presentation

* speeches must be recorded using iConnect Present

* outlines and speeches must be submitted to their respective drop boxes as follows:

(1) Informative Outline--Sunday, end of Week 4, 11:59 P.M. (MT)

(2) Informative Speech--Sunday, end of Week 5, 11:59 P.M. (MT)

(3) Persuasive Outline-- Sunday of Week 7, 11:59 P.M. (MT)

(4) Persuasive Speech - Thursday of Week 8, 11:59 P.M. (MT)

Outline Guidelines

Outline Template. You must submit an outline for each speech. You are required to use the outline template found in Doc Sharing and complete all sections. The body of the outline can be phrases or full sentences, but not single words. The body of the outline must have a minimum of three main points (Roman numerals) and a minimum of two additional levels of sub points under each main point (capital letters, then numbers).

References: The informative outline must have a minimum of three credible sources. The persuasive outline must have a minimum of four credible sources. Your References must appear in full APA style and format. For advice on using APA

PowerPoint and Speech Recording Guidelines

Speech Recording: You will record your speeches using the audio narration function within PowerPoint. You will need a headset microphone. The directions are located in the iConnect Present tab under Course Home.

Presentation Time Frame of 5-7 minutes. In a speech of this length, the opening and closing should be approximately one minute long each. Remember to preview and review. When we make oral presentations, we always tell the audience where we are taking them and then end with a summary of where we have been. So, for your presentations, preview your main areas or points in the opening, and then review those same points in your closing to reinforce the messages and signal the ending of the speech.

How Many Slides? Your PowerPoint slides should align with and support the points of the thesis. A good rule of thumb is approximately 3-5 slides per main point of your speech. You also need a title slide that appears during your introduction, a slide that appears during the conclusion of your presentation, and a final slide which lists your references as they appear in your outline.
