Studying Effectively
There are many different ways to study effectively. What makes it work effectively, knowing the way you learn. I always knew what kind of study person I was; I just didn't know how to label myself. I finally did not figure it out until college. It was College Survival Skills that actually helped me figure out the kind of learner I am. I realized that Organizational skills and study skills are very important in life, especially in college. I took the "Multiple Intelligence Survey" and scored really high on Visual learning; and that is how I labeled my learning habits. There are several techniques that I have learned along the way on how to study and the learning styles that I use.
As I spoke about, the surveys in the College Survival Skills book are very helpful. It taught me that I am an Intrapersonal learner. An intrapersonal learner "studies in a quiet area, studies by themselves, allows time for reflection and meditation about the subject matter, studies in short time blocks and then spend some time absorbing the information, and works at their own pace"(CSS, 124). This reminds me of me! Anytime I have to study or do homework I MUST be isolated in the room by myself. My father loves to interrupt when I'm writing a paper, but it bothers me so much. Music cannot be played when I am writing or studying. I am easily distracted. When I study or read anything I must absorb what I just read or studied, and I work at my own pace. If someone is going too fast for me, I rather do it by myself. For instance one time I had a project to do, and me and my friend decided to do it together, that was a bad idea. She has a different style of learning; she was too quick for me! I winded up doing the project by myself because I have different ways of learning what I am taught.
Verbal and Linguistic is another way of learning. Verbal-Linguistic learning is the ability to communicate through language; listening, reading, writing, and speaking. I took the Multiple Pathways to Learning Survey on Pg.125 in the college survival skills book and scored 21 out of 24 possible points. I'm more of a talker so I have realized. I enjoy telling stories, I express myself clearly, I am very good at negotiating, and I love to discuss topics that interest me. It was my junior year, and my English teacher loved to debate. I was in my ROTC uniform and she spoke about how she did not like the army, marines, air force, etc. She and I got into a huge debate that lasted the whole 90 minute period. I knew how to express myself and my opinions and she taught me how to use that into my writing. I didn't know being outspoken or negotiating, helped
