In a web dictionary, there are three meanings of success. The first meaning is a favorable or prosperous termination of attempts or endeavors; the second one is an attainment of wealth, position and honors; and the third one is a successful performance or achievement. In fact, successmay have different meanings to different people. As a Chinese saying goes, if you can buy a bungalow, raise a pedigree dog and drive a globrand sedan, you are considered to be a successful man. This monetary possession is similar to what an American pursues in the American Dream. It is also similar to the story of success in "From Ragged Dick" by Horatio Alger. This monetary possession seems a commonly accepted measurement of success in the whole world. To a certain extent, I agree that monetary possession is a (not a count noun) success, yet spiritual life is also important. Success to me consists of both personal and societal goal. The personal goal is an achievement that a person wants to pursuit. It is usually measured in terms of monetary values. The societal goal is a contribution that a person makes to a society. It consists of dignity, respects, honors, care and kindness, which are conceptual and spiritual. Most people are usually assessing monetary possession as the measure of a person's success. In fact, we are not living alone rather we are in a society. We have our societal goal to accomplish. However, it is very important because it would affect every people in the society. It is a cornerstone for a person to build up his own successful story. We, as one of the members in the society, have a moral duty to create at least a fair and equal opportunity to all people.
