After conducting a study of the internal and external environments of Tanglewood, it is safe to say that Tanglewood may have some difficulties in staffing their vacancies for a number of reasons. For example, even though there are available candidates that are qualified to fill the managerial positions, Tanglewood requires its employees to initially start as associates and work their way up in the company. The choice is left to them if they choose to do so. Also if the store needs these positions filled, store associates are asked first. This presents the issue of only hiring within.

Since one of the main goals of the company is to hire an exceptional workforce, I would recommend the hiring of young, motivated, and intelligent candidates after they have expressed a desire to potentially grow with the company. The hiring of high school and college students who are seeking to provide income for themselves would be a very feasible approach. High school students could be the perfect match for this role because these candidates may just be looking for a part-time job to have in order to make some extra spending money and to gain some work experience.

Based on the forecasted growth and number of associates needed to fill new positions internally, the company will need to hire more associates at the lowest level. In order to achieve the goal of hiring enough associates to meet the forecasted needs going into next year, first, we will have to ensure potential candidates that the retail store business can provide great opportunities to grow with the company and advance their careers. Providing higher pay and flexible schedules will be some of the ways to promote this concept. Providing associates, new and experienced, with a variety of tasks to perform will improve job satisfaction, as well as gaining the knowledge of working and in different departments throughout the store. Tanglewood must continue to emphasize its core culture values and let its associates know that they are its most important asset. This is very important because they are the frontline of the company.

As for hiring internally and developing the talent of existing associates, such as those who have been with company for a while and have expressed a desire to advance to higher positions (shift leaders, department managers, and assistant managers), I suggest allowing them to participate in a management trainee program. In keeping with our policies of starting everyone at the bottom, this will provide them with the necessary skills to move to the level with minimum
